Nihad has grown up in a diplomatic family, with an older brother and two younger twin sisters. She received her education in different countries and continents due to travelling with her family as her father served as an Egyptian Diplomat in various countries. During her high school years in Houston, Texas USA, Nihad had the opportunity to develop her knowledge and excel in her education in the American system, addition to experiencing the working life through her summer job as a kindergarten teacher. As the family moved back to Cairo, Nihad attended her senior year as an honor student and attained her high school diploma from Cairo American College in Maadi. She completed her University education with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1987 with high honors from the American University in Cairo, majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Economics and Computer science. Through her university years, she served a professor's assistant for Business Management and had summer internships experience in Xerox and IBM. Immediately after graduation was hired in Banca Commerciale Italiana, where she served as a Transfer accountant, Teller, and Credit Officer. After serving in the treasury field in an International Bank for 7 years, she then joined a multinational leading Petroleum company - Mobil Oil Egypt, in the Treasury Department as a Financing Supervisor, held several positions to reach the level of experience that allowed her promotion to the position of Egypt Treasurer. Nihad was fortunate to experience the gigantic merger of Exxon and Mobil and managed the Treasury merging process and was one of the key merger team members. Nihad’s financial career advanced to successfully manage the Treasury responsibilities of the North Africa & Middle East Cluster covering the company’s Affiliates in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Cyprus, Dubai and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as the North Africa and Middle East Treasurer. During her Treasury role, Nihad successfully managed the challenges faced by the company during the Foreign Exchange shortages of 2001-2004, and effectively the company’s cash flow and foreign exchange needs to ensure business continuity. Presently, and for eight years, Nihad advanced her career to hold the position of Public & Government Affairs Manager, covering Egypt and Cyprus. She is also a member of the ExxonMobil Egypt Board of Directors, and an active member in several internal committees at Exxon Mobil Egypt such as the Wellness Committee and Women Interest Network (WIN). In addition, Nihad is a member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt and is engaged in key committees in the American Chamber of Egypt.
In March 2017, Nihad was awarded the "Women Leadership Award" by the Business Women of Egypt Association. Nihad was also recognized to be one of the Top 50 Most Influential Women of Egypt for 2017, and was awarded The Women in Energy Leader in February 2018 by the Ministry of Petroleum
Nihad Shelbaya established the Nada Foundation for Safer Egyptian Roads in August 2014, with the objective to address the fast growing problem of incidence and prevalence of road and traffic related injuries and mortality in Egypt, and provide scientifically based methods for tackling the issue and preventive measures to help reduce the loss.
